When is a Geranium Not a Geranium?
When it's a pelargonium! Both scented geraniums and the familiar, large-flowered
annual ("zonal") geraniums are not true geraniums but rather belong in the
genus Pelargonium. The Victorians called them geraniums and the name stuck.
The scent in scented geraniums is found in oil glands in the foliage. To
release the strongest scent, rub
a leaf between your fingers. Place scented geraniums in containers on a
patio or along a path; as you brush past them you'll release
a light scent. And if you don't particularly like the scent of those
large-flowered
geraniums, don't despair. The fragrance of scented geraniums is lighter
and sweeter. And very popular. They've been cultivated since the early 1600s
and there are dozens, if not hundreds, of varieties with scents ranging
from citrus to spice to rose. Pinch back plants occasionally
to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers.
