Scented Geraniums
The International Herb Association has selected scented geraniums the Herb
of the Year for 2006, and for good reason. These remarkable plants have
highly aromatic leaves with distinctive scents that include fruity, spicy,
and floral. Native to South Africa, the plants have been hybridized since
the 1600s, yielding hundreds of varieties with an astonishing range of
scents.
The scent comes from a drop of oil on the tip of each leaf hair; the scent is
released when the leaf is rubbed or crushed. So, locate your scented geraniums
where the oils will be released — spilling over a walkway so passersby
inadvertantly brush against them, or in containers near seating areas so you
can pluck and
crush an occasional leaf, for example.
